The new SB12-NSD
Size still matters with subs. But with a new amp, new woofer, new cabinet and grill treatment... size matters less than ever.
Making smaller, better, for less, was SVS’ approach with the earlier and well-regarded SB12-Plus micro sub. The magazines took notice, and it remained a great seller to the end.
2010 SVS Sealed Box subs will not replace our big vented Powered Boxes, nor the space saving Powered Cylinders. But the "SB" subs will be a hard-hitting alternative for those who can not fit a larger subwoofer, and still crave hard-hitting bass and top notch sound quality. SB12-NSD will provide good and controlled quality bass up to 25-30m2 rooms. If you want to go for reference levels you will need larger subwoofers.
With the SB12-NSD, SVS started out with all they learned from the SB12-Plus, improved upon that to raise its performance, and removed some of its features to be able to sell it at a lower price. The SB12-NSD is more powerful, better sounding and with the nicer metal grill.
The three years since the SB12-Plus was launched have not only been spent designing its successors, but also testing and identifying the best (and not the least expensive parts), that are the building bricks in the new SB subwoofers.
Be it the modern grill, or the incredibly new amp technology, they are all results of 3 years of tireless work with the top audio suppliers around the world. Even in such a seemingly simple component as the metal grill, you will be able to track metal working of the highest quality and thoughtful details like small rubber pads that will prevent any hint of vibration. This will ensure quiet, resonance-free operation, even at high sound pressure levels.

New driver
Dig further and you will find a brand new NSD driver sporting a light weight Alu cone. This hand built NSD driver is new from the ground up, and it is a fundamental part of the class leading performance found in the SB12-NSD. This new driver comes with an improved efficiency that better exploits the power in the new amps.
A light weight bifilar aluminum voice coil and a new composite spider are both part of the improved sensitivity found in this new NSD driver. As in every SVS driver there is a supersized motor structure with heavyweight magnets. This motor and the lightweight construction of the drivers moving parts leads to more dynamics, nuance and a better response than what you usually would find in this price range.
New amplifier - STA-400D Sledge
Another component, paramount to the class leading performance, is the new DSP controlled STA400D Sledge amplifier. It not only pumps out more powerful watts than its predecessors, it is also smarter and more efficient.
DSP as a technology is not new, but it is the way SVS have chosen to exploit it. First they have chosen to give the new SB12-NSD a 2nd order roll off. This is the frequency response the true audiophiles prefer, and it also leads to bass as deep as your room can support. By using some extremely transparent and intelligent limiters SVS has been able to eliminate the trade off normally associated with this solution, distortion and audible artifacts.
The limiters in the new Sledge amps are so transparent that you will never be able to detect that they are there. For you to be able to know that the limiters are at work, SVS have implemented a LED at the back of the sub that will light up when the limiters are activated. Unless you have a peek back there, you will experience nothing but limitless bass.
As always, the continuously variable phase control is there to ensure that perfect integration with your loudspeakers. Together with a crossover with frequencies as low as 30Hz, you will with ease reach a perfect result in any room and with any size speaker.
Even when resting, the new Sledge amplifier does it better. It comes sporting an eco-friendly green power supply with less than 1w stand-by consumption. Good for the environment, good for your electricity bill.
New finish
The NSD series has just as the T-Ford was, been available in any color as long as it is black . This saying will still hold true, but the number of finishes doubles as you can now have the SB12-NSD also in Piano Gloss Black. Therefore you can now choose if you want your SB12-NSD in the sturdy Charcoal Black, or if you want it wrapped in Piano Gloss, better reflecting its refined inner qualities.
The SB12-NSD is built to last, and this includes the cabinet that is as solid as all SVS cabinets have been since day one. Topped of with SVS’ equally solid metal grill, it will not only look good, but keep on doing so for years to come.
