New from SVS: PB10-NSD

The name is the same, and just by looking at it, the subwoofer still appears to be the same, so what is new here? The easiest way to describe it would be to say “everything”. Initially that may seem like a bold claim, since it takes a trained eye to be able to spot the difference between the new and the outgoing model, but underneath the hood, everything is new.
The “old” model has since it was launched almost 5 years ago been known as the subwoofer that performs better than it should be able to do. This in regard first to its size, but not at least when also considering the price. When first launched, the PB10 revolutionized the understanding of what a relatively inexpensive subwoofer should perform like, and it opened many thousand ears to what depths and dynamics lay hidden in the sound from movies and music. As if by magic, all of a sudden performance previously associated with subwoofers in unattainable price classes was now available for a price where most people could join in. That it still, almost 5 years later is the undisputed champion of mid-class subwoofers, and the most inexpensive sub able to convey the realism found in the HD soundtracks on Bluray, means that when it now is replaced, it is not out of necessity, but because SVS can.The PB10-NSD has always been known as the subwoofer that performs better than it should be able to do. Therefore it was far from a small challenge when SVS set out to design a successor to this legend. How do you improve what is already better than what it should be?

More of everything!
More features: It is now equipped with high level inputs and a crossover, good news for those who would like to use theirs with a traditional stereo amplifier. But even more important, it has been given more performance. First it is now sporting the same amplifier used in its bigger brother, the PB12-NSD, there is a upgraded driver with an aluminum cone, and last but not least the port has been upgraded from 3 to 3.5" and redesigned. Half an inch extra may not seem like much, but it leads more than 36% increased capacity, and in addition the new port design is more efficient than the old one, so that the PB10-NSD unstrained can pump out bass like never before. The sum of all those incremental upgrades is that the PB10-NSD now has taken a step forward and up, and can render bass with even more refinement and power than before. The previous model reigned supremely in all the years it was on the market.
Perhaps the new PB10-NSD will do the same until SVS some 5 years from now brings out one that is even a bit better.
